I did. Actually, I receive that kind of mail almost every day: CONGRATULATIONS, YOU ARE A WINNER! (even though I never play lottery), or VERY RICH MAN has decided to leave you a huge sum of money, are just some of them! All you have to do is to send some information to contact person, and your dream will come true:).
When I first received that kind of e-mail, I was confused and, I have to admit that I had a little hope that it is try :). Unfortunately, very unpleasant things can happen to people who really believe in those stories. The most common form of product placement is putting a product name or logo in the background of a scene, and unconsciously, people accept this messages. There are so many examples for this phenomena. For example, use of Coca Cola placement in reality show American Idol.
But, there are also many problems connected with product placement, and with this kind of advertising. On the first place there are law restrictions. Until today product placement is not legally regulated, but marketers asked EU to approve product placement in TV shows and other public performances. One recommendation is for such placement to be clearly identified at the start of show, so that viewers are aware of them.
There are also some regulations of European Countries which refer to broadcasting of commercials. In the area of commercials there are restrictions and banes. For example, in Austria, France, Swiss and Spain it is banned to advertise alcohol before 09 p.m., and in some countries, it is absolutely forbidden. It can also refer to tobacco and some pharmaceutical products. The restriction and ban can also depend on contents of products and kind of TV or other programme.
I think that product placement is very smart move, because making an advertisement requests lot of time, money and is very risky. No one can guarantee that the advertisement would give good results, or that it would be waist of time. But, marketers also use media to promote their products, even if it is forbidden or illegal. Trend of product placement is spread all over the world, and we can’t neglect its presence. The only damaged part is audience who unconsciously accept these messages, even if they don’t want it. And it is not fair play. Benefits that media gets from marketers is used for private goods, and not for public and I think that something has to be changed. There must be some rules and regulations which will be respected by both sides-media and marketers on one side, and audience on another.
